What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is where the backbone curves slightly to the side. The curve's angle can vary, from small to a large curve. If the curve is more than 10 degrees, it is considered scoliosis. The curve may look like a C or S.

What Causes Scoliosis?

In 80% of cases, there is no known cause of scoliosis. Scoliosis that does not have a known cause is called idiopathic scoliosis. Structural and nonstructural scoliosis do have causes.

A person with nonstructural scoliosis has a curved spine that works normally. People with structural scoliosis have a spine that is not able to bend. Some common causes of structural scoliosis include tumors, cerebral palsy, infections, muscular dystrophy, birth defects, Down syndrome, and Marfan syndrome.

Congenital scoliosis is a birth defect where the spine does not develop correctly while the baby is still in the womb. This type of scoliosis may not be diagnosed until the person is in his or her teen years.

What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?

Adults and children with scoliosis may display slightly different symptoms. Symptoms of scoliosis in children include pushed out ribs, uneven shoulders, arms not hanging straight down when standing up, head not centered with the rest of the body, and one hip appearing higher than the other.

Symptoms of scoliosis in adults include having shortness breath, feeling full rapidly, hips or shoulders that are uneven, bone spurs, a bump in the lower back, feeling tired, not able to stand straight, and having trouble walking.

How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Our chiropractor can diagnose scoliosis with a physical examination and X-rays of the spine. We can help ease the pain, improve range of motion and flexibility, and decrease inflammation with non-invasive treatments. Our chiropractor may suggest spinal decompression and massage therapy to improve your condition. Spinal decompression involves gently stretching the spine using a special table that is operated by our chiropractor. Stretching the spine can take pressure off of nerves and soft tissue, bringing pain relief to the back. Massage therapy uses long, circular strokes all over the body to promote relaxation and pain relief.
